 CAROLINA THUNDER NAMES ASSISTANT COACHES

The Carolina ThunderCharlotte, NC. Tony Priscaro, CEO of the new ABA Carolina Thunder today named the assistant coaches for the professional basketball team scheduled to begin play in November. According to Priscaro, "Derrick Hamilton will serve as Assistant Head Coach and Timothy W. Anderson will serve as Assistant Coach. Both are well-qualified and should help make our team one of the strongest in the league."

Derrick Hamilton attended the University of Southern Mississippi and was drafted in the 2nd round in 1988 by the New Jersey Nets along with Chris Morris and NC State's Charles Shackleford. He spent 13 years in Europe and was known as one of the best small forwards in the Euro League. Hamilton stated, "I am really looking forward to the challenge and to working with Coach Rowsom. We have some great talent here. We'll be ready."

Tim Anderson has over 10 years basketball coaching experience including a stint with Ontario's Pro Basketball Association. he has conducted and promoted numerous basketball clinics and camps and in 1989 implemented Girls Youth Basketball for North Carolina Amateur Sports State Games. Due to his pioneering efforts, Tim received an Olympic Achievement Award from Dr. Leroy T. Walker, President of the US Olympic Committee for work with the committe and NC games. A 1986 graduate of North Carolina Central University, Tim knows Carolina basketball and will be a great addition to the staff.

The Carolina ThunderWe have worked out a special rate with the Residence Inn, which is the closest hotel to the tryout camps this weekend. The rate is $69.00 per night, you just have to ask for the Weekend Special for the Carolina Thunder Tryout Camps. There are other hotels with lower rates however you would have a farther trip to the camps in the morning.

 Directions To June Tryout Camp

The Carolina Thunder

From South --Taking 85 North, take exit number 36 onto NC-16/ Brookshire Freeway towards US 74E and downtown. Merge onto NC - 16 towards Charlotte/ Ericsson Stadium for about 4 miles. Then merge onto US - 74 via exit number 2B (from the left lane) towards NC-27 / East Independence Boulevard. Follow Independence for 5 and a quarter miles and then make a sharp right onto Idlewild road. Idlewild becomes Rama Road. Drive about 2 miles; Rama Road become Sardis Road and Providence Day is on the left.

From North --Taking 85 South, get on I-77 S. Then take the I-277/Brookshire Freeway exit 11 which merges onto the Brookshire Freeway South (far left lane; don't go North in right lane). Exit left onto Independence Blvd East; then turn right on Idlewild Rd. Idlewild becomes Rama Road. At intersection where Rama Road becomes Sardis Road, turn left. PDS is immediately on the right.

From East --Taking 85 South, exit onto I-77 South. Take Tyvola exit. Continue Tyvola east until it becomes Sardis Road. At intersection of Rama Rd. turn right. PDS is on immediate right.

 CAROLINA THUNDER ANNOUNCES HEAD COACH

The Carolina ThunderCHARLOTTE, NC – Tony Priscaro, ABA Carolina Thunder CEO, today announced that Brian Rowsom has accepted the position as Head Coach of the new pro basketball team scheduled to begin play in November.

Priscaro stated, "We interviewed many prospects for our Head Coach position and found no one with the knowledge of the game and the ability to identify quality talent and team than Brian. We have no doubt that he will put together a very good team."

Rowsom, a graduate of UNC Wilmington in 1987 was drafted in the 2nd round by the NBA Indiana Pacers (along with Reggie Miller) and played there before joining the Charlotte Hornets. He also played in France, Israel, Japan and England and retired after the 1998 season to start Global Basketball Services which provides agent services for players seeking to play pro ball overseas and in the US. Rowsom has placed over 85 players world wide in professional leagues.

Rowsom added, "We've been doing free agent camps in North Carolina for several years. The talent in this area is remarkable; the players available from Duke, NC, NC State, Wake Forest and other area schools is great. And of course, our tryout camps draw outstanding players from throughout the world. You won't believe some of the players we have coming into our June 12 and 13 tryout camp."

 First Round of Tryout Camps Announced!!!

The Carolina Thunder, our area’s new ABA team has announced the team’s first round of Tryout Camps. The camp will be held at Providence Day School in Charlotte, NC on June 12 and 13. The registration fee for those interested in trying out is $130.00 if your application is received by June 4th and $150.00 thereafter, including the day of tryouts. Hotel discount information will be posted to our website during the next week, as well as other tryout camp locations.

Registration for the camp will be 8-9AM on 6/12.
Camp will run fom 9-5 on 6/12 and from 9-1 on 6/13.

The registration form, available here, must be printed, filled out, and mailed with your Money Order or Cashiers Check for the registration fee. Personal checks will not be accepted.

 NORTH CAROLINA NAMES TEAM,NEW STAFF, AND FIRST TRYOUTS

The Carolina ThunderCharlotte, NC. Tony Priscaro, CEO of the ABA North Carolina expansion team today announced the team name, the Director of Player Personnel, and the first tryout camp. According to Priscaro, "This is the first in a series of announcements we'll be making in the weeks to come as we prepare for our first season. The name of the team is the CAROLINA THUNDER; a blockbuster "NASCAR" type logo will be released this week and it will do the people of North Carolina proud." Priscaro added, "And we are very pleased to have secured James Bynum as our Director of Player Personnel. James is a very knowledge and experienced person with a wonderful basketball background. He'll make the CAROLINA THUNDER one of the premiere teams in the league." Bynum played collegiate basketball for Lee Jr. College and Ohio State University. He served 22 years in the U.S. Army and played for top Armed Services teams while in military service. He currently serves as Director of Scouting with Global Sports. Bynum added, "We'll be naming our Head Coach in the next couple of days. Meantime, we have scheduled our first Tryout Camp - and we're doing it in Charlotte, NC on June 12 & 13.  MOVE OVER BOBCATS - THERE'S A SECOND PRO TEAM IN CHARLOTTE

The Carolina ThunderABA Pro Basketball League Announces 12th Expansion Team Indianapolis, IN. Joe Newman, ABA Co-Founder, today announced the 12th team in the record-growing pro basketball league - Charlotte, North Carolina. According to Newman, "We know that the NBA's Charlotte Bobcats are starting next season, but the ABA and new owners felt strongly that the market was large enough and basketball fan support great enough to handle two teams. We believe that fans will love the fast-paced, high scoring, entertainment filled ABA style of play - at ABA affordable prices." Tony N. Priscaro, team co-owner added, "And our goal is to find the best available players from schools like Duke, North Carolina, Wake Forest, NC State and other area teams to fill our roster. There are so many great players available from this area. It should be exciting seeing them all together on the same team. With ticket prices averaging around $10.00, our games will be affordable for families, students, seniors, military, everyone. A 1992 graduate of Slippery Rock University, he is a professional musician and has appeared in the movie, "The Break," with Martin Sheen and has also hosted a variety of radio and TV shows. Tony continued, "We will combine sports and entertainment and make every game fun, interesting and exciting - show business meets sports business." Dwayne D. Woodruff, the other co-owner, is a founding partner with the law firm of Woodruff, Flaherty & Fardo in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He is also Regional Vice President of Capital Asset Research Corporation, but is best known as having been a defensive back for the Pittsburgh Steelers for 12 years including one season as team MVP. Dwayne was a 1979 graduate of the University of Louisville, holds a BS in Finance and earned his Juris Doctor Degree from Duquesne School of Law. "We thought long and hard about where we wanted to put our team. We could think of no better area than North Carolina," stated Woodruff, "It is the center of basketball and we will give the fans their money's worth." The Carolina ThunderExpansion Team Looking for Winning Combination Charlotte, NC. Tony Priscaro, CEO of the new ABA Charlotte expansion team scheduled to begin play in November, today announced that the team is looking for a General Manager and a Head Coach. According to Priscaro, "While we prefer a GM and coach with a Carolina background, we are open to all applicants. This is North Carolina, home of the best basketball in the world. We expect nothing less than a winning team and it all starts with the GM and the coach." Priscaro added, "We are planning our first tryouts early this summer as we look for the top area players - North Carolina, Duke, Wake Forest, Charlotte, etc. We'd like to have our GM and coach in place soon."
